Manny is an award-winning journalist, author, TEDx speaker, podcast producer, independent scholar, and founding director of The Hip Hop Institute for Social Innovation.
Across media, education, public scholarship, and institutional work, he has built a career around recognizing overlooked ideas, amplifying voices that deserve greater attention, and translating Hip Hop’s history and creative intelligence into possibilities for a more innovative, connected, and just society.
THE STORY BEHIND THE WORK
How a lifelong connection to Hip Hop became a larger mission.
Manny came to Hip Hop first as a fan of the music and participant in the culture, not as an outside observer searching for a subject. Long before the books, keynotes, or institutional work, he was listening, DJing, attending events, building relationships, and experiencing firsthand how Hip Hop creates identity, community, knowledge, and possibility.
Journalism became one way to serve and contribute to that culture: documenting its people, challenging shallow narratives, creating independent platforms, and drawing attention to important work often overlooked by mainstream media. Through online publications, live radio, podcasts, events, and cultural advocacy, Manny witnessed Hip Hop’s deepest contributions happening far beyond the music industry — in classrooms, neighborhoods, civic spaces, nonprofit organizations, and movements for change.
Over time, that work developed into a broader mission: not simply to cover Hip Hop, but to help preserve its integrity, expand how the world understands it, and explore how its ideas can be responsibly applied to the challenges people and institutions face.
